The lush worlds of Julie Heffernan teem and spill over with objects, animals, and figures creating an environment ripe for story-telling. Each of Heffernan's paintings are entitled self-portrais despite the fact that some are landscapes, still-lives, or a combination of the two. In her paintings, the artist builds up multi-layered narratives that fit within the schema of her invented worlds. Heffernan explains in an article by Jennifer Samet entitled "Beer with a Painter: Julie Heffernan" that her process is organic usually starting with an idea or a collection of images; she then begins painting and making marks on her canvas carving out areas where things emerge while pushing other elements back into the painting.
