Carrie Ann Baade's painted collage technique is an interesting composite of old world masters' techniques and collage. At the beginning of this process, she creates a collage allowing for whacky juxtaposition that recall the tenents of Surrealism. Then she utilizes old masters' techniques to paint her collage in a trompe l'oeil style. In an interview by Phantasmaphile, the artist explains that she collects and archives numerous images over the span of years in order to create her paintings. When expanding upon her painted collage process, Baade states, "The most exciting part is when I am painting and the collage begins to fall apart and elements that were buried under layers start to resurface.".
